What Is Retrofit: Can You Add Tile Trim After Tiling?

12/12/2024

When it comes to tiling, many people question whether you can add tile trim after tiling. Understanding the different ways to install tile trim will be useful in the consideration process of your project. In this guide, we’ll explore the meaning of retrofitting, and answer the important question of whether you can add tile trim after tiling.

What Is Retrofit?

Retrofit refers to the process of modifying, improving, or upgrading something that’s already installed. In the context of tiling, retrofitting often involves making adjustments or additions, such as installing tile trim after the tiles are already in place. While the ideal scenario is to plan for tile trim before starting your project, retrofit solutions provide a way to correct oversights or enhance aesthetics without completely redoing your work.

Some examples of retrofit tile trim are corner protection trim and retrofit stair nosing that are fitted after the tiling has taken place. The biggest advantage of retrofit tile trim is that nothing is set in place, meaning if you decide you would like to change the look of the trim, or if it gets damaged, it is very easy to change without having to remove the floor covering.

The biggest advantage of this is that nothing is set in place, so if you decide that you would like to change the look/colour, or the trim gets damaged it will be very easy to change the overall look of the job without having to remove the floor covering.

Can You Add Tile Trim After Tiling?

Many people ask ‘can you fit tile trim after tiling?’ and the simple answer is yes. However, this process can be more challenging than installing trim during the initial tiling phase. Retrofitting tile trim requires precision, the right tools, and often a good adhesive to ensure the trim stays securely in place.

Do You Put Tile Trim on Before Tiling?

In most cases, it’s recommended to install tile trim before or during the tiling process. Pre-installation of trim allows for seamless integration with the tiles, ensuring a cleaner and more professional finish. This approach also ensures that the trim protects tile edges from chipping and damage, however if this is not an option you can use retrofit trim to achieve your desired results.

At Premium Tile Trim we stock a range of retro fit stair nosings. This is a type of stair edging designed to be installed on existing stairs, rather than during the initial construction. It improves safety by providing better traction and visibility on stair edges, reduces wear and tear, and enhances the aesthetics of the stairs. Retrofit stair nosing is particularly useful for upgrading old stairs without major renovations, as it can be fitted directly over the existing steps. Popular choices include Genesis NSL01 Slimline aluminium stair nosing and the Genesis NSL09 slimline with tredsafe insert.

If your project is already complete and you’re looking to retrofit trim, follow these steps for the best results:

1. Measure and Choose the Right Trim

Select a tile trim that compliments your existing tiles. At Premium Tile Trim we stock an extensive range of tile trims in a variety of colours including Chrome Tile Trim, Black Tile Trim, Gold Tile Trim, Brass Tile Trim and White Tile Trim, different profiles which include round edge tile trim, square edge tile trim and straight edge tile trim, and materials such as metal tile trim or plastic tile trim. Use a tape measure to calculate the exact length required for each edge you want to cover.

2. Clean the Tile Edges

Ensure that the tile edges are clean and free of any dust, grease, or debris. A clean surface ensures better adhesion.

3. Cut the Trim to Size

Using a hacksaw such as the Bahco 317 Hacksaw or a specialised tile trim cutter like the Proxxon KGS 80 Chop & Mitre Saw, carefully cut the trim to match the dimensions of your tile edges. File down any sharp edges to create a smooth finish.

4. Apply Adhesive

For retrofitting, a strong adhesive such as tile glue or silicone sealant is essential. Apply the adhesive evenly along the back of the trim.

5. Secure the Trim

Press the trim into place, ensuring it aligns perfectly with the tile edge. Use masking tape to hold the trim in position while the adhesive sets.

6. Allow the Adhesive to Cure

Let the adhesive dry for the recommended amount of time as specified by the manufacturer. Once cured, remove the masking tape and inspect for any adjustments needed.
